THE ARC OF THE GROOVE
by Steve Smith (2013)

"Every piece of music has an arc: a beginning middle and end. Some music has no pulsating groove, yet the flow of forward motion can be felt. Other music has a strong danceable groove. Much of the music that I play has a groove but the groove can be quite elastic and impressionistic, the groove ebbs and flows. I can see that impressionistic arc of the groove in this piece."

IMPROVISATION: ENDLESS VARIATIONS
by Steve Smith (2013)

"Improvisation is such an interesting phenomena. One takes a vocabulary they have developed and then use that vocabulary to express countless ideas. With my music, I embark on journeys of improvisation night after night. I feel that I can come up with endless variations of the drumming vocabulary that I have amassed over the years. To me, this piece evokes the mystery of improvisation and the endless variations of expression."

BANYAN
by Steve Smith (2013)

"I have a fascination with Indian rhythms and have been studying and performing Indian rhythms since 2002. This piece brings to mind the structure and shape of the Banyan tree, the national tree of India. The Banyan tree is an epiphyte, which is a plant that grows on another plant. I relate to that concept when it comes to the way I approach Indian rhythms. My rhythmic foundation is that of a U.S. drummer and the Indian rhythms that I use grow from, and are an extension of, my own musical roots."

CONDOR
by Steve Smith (2013)

"After playing a press roll, starting quietly on the snare drum, I opened up the roll using side-to-side motions with both hands. With this method of playing an open roll we achieved an interesting image that reminded me of the California Condor. This piece occurred moments after Zen Roll."

ZEN ROLL
by Steve Smith (2013)

"For me, the best way to play a smooth press roll on my snare drum is to use side-to-side, lateral, motion. This approach becomes evident in the piece "Zen Roll." I call the piece Zen Roll because of its stark simplicity."

INFINITY KNOT

FIRE & ICE
by Steve Smith (2013)

"You can see the divergent elements of fire and ice in this piece. You can also see that I was playing my kit with two different colored sticks without crossing from one side of the kit to the other. Because I have been using the Vic Firth Lite Sticks for years – practicing in front of a mirror in a dark room -- I had developed a concept of how to create interesting images using rhythm and motion. KINETIC DANCE
by Steve Smith (2013)

"This is a very close-up look at my sticks rebounding off the top of a practice pad. When I play, I hold the sticks loosely and use a minimum of effort. As soon as the tip of the stick impacts a surface it immediately rebounds. You can see that very clearly in the image of Ritual Dance. Playing the drums has long been associated with encouraging people to dance. When I play there are many times when I feel like I’m involved in dancing myself."

CHOREOGRAPHY OF SOUND
by Steve Smith (2013)

"This piece is based is an “Under/Over” cymbal move. The rhythmic phrase that I played for this piece is the double paradiddle, which I notated. I play the bottom of my right 18” Zildjian crash on the 1st R, the L is played on the snare drum. The 2nd R is played on the top of the right side 18” crash, the LRR is played on my snare drum. Then I reverse the choreography: 1st L comes up to the bottom on the 18” crash on my left, the R on the snare, the 2nd L comes down on the top of the 18” left side 18” crash, the RLL is on the snare. I always knew this lick had an interesting sound and look but with this piece I can actually see the choreography of the motions and sounds that are produced."

QUADRAPHONIC
by Steve Smith (2013)

"I love this series of images using a red tipped Vic Firth Lite-Stick in my right hand and a green tipped Lite-Stick in my left hand. All four worked together so well we went with a collage. I was playing straight-ahead swing at a medium tempo, relaxed and open. You can see the extreme rebound and motions of my hands in all four shots and my “over/under” moves on the hi-hat in the upper left hand corner. These are perfect examples of seeing what happens in-between the beats you hear: You can actually see the fabric of the rhythm."

CYMBALIC ALCHEMY
by Steve Smith (2013)

"The process of playing with light-sticks and creating art on canvas makes me think of alchemy: the transmutation of common metals into gold. We got some results that were completely unexpected and unexplainable, like this piece “Cymbalic Alchemy.” Upon close examination, I noticed the Zildjian logo in the lower left corner; we are looking at one of my cymbals from underneath. Zildjian does something analogous to alchemy when they take a metal ingot and turn it into a cymbal. The image of a cymbal has been transformed into something mysterious, indescribable, more like peering at a distant galaxy than looking at the bottom of a cymbal: Cymbalic Alchemy."
